Großer Tag für Zadock jr. Seine Graduation-Feier an der Universität von Buea (UB). Zusammen mit 13 Doktortitel Verleihungen bekamen ca. 2000 weitere Studenten ihren Bachelor oder Master. Die Veranstaltung war die "Ninteenth Convocation".
Natürlich strömten die Massen an, da viele Eltern bei der Feier ihrer Töchter oder Söhne dabei sein wollten. Auch wir waren zu siebt vertreten: Zadock sr, Beatrice, Fritz, Hanne, Andrea, Eli und ich.
Die UB macht den Eindruck eines Unicampus, wie wir ihn hier auch kennen: Weitläufiges Gelände mit den einzelnen Fakultätsgebäuden, der Bibliothek usw.

Zuerst standen wir in einer langen Schlange, damit wir Einlass ins "Herbert Nganjo Endeley Amphitheatre", sozusagen das Auditorium Maximum der UB, bekommen sollten. Nach einem Anruf von Zadock jr, dass schon alles voll wäre (als Studenten durften sie im Amphiteatre sein), gingen wir an die Abzäunung, um einen Blick auf Zadock jr werfen zu können. Dort entdeckte uns ein Polizist und er fragte mich, ob wir rein wollten und wie viele Personen wir wären. Nachdem ich im mitteilte, dass wir zu siebt seien, führte er uns an allen Leuten vorbei zu einem Eingang. Dort übernahm uns eine Studentin und führte uns zu Gästeplätzen. Hier konnten wir die ganze Veranstaltung aus der Nähe verfolgen. Und wir bekamen die Festschrift und einen Essensgutschein!
Die gesamte Veranstaltung war viel lockerer als bei Ruths Graduation an der Katholischen Uni. Dabei trugen auch hier alle Professoren und Studenten ihre Roben.

The Registrar will rise, cap and address the Chancellor as follows:
"Mr. Chancellor, the students presentet here today have fulfilled all the requirements of the University and has been found worthy by Senate, in character and in learning, to be awarded the higher degrees in the Faculty of Science. I, therfore, call upon the Dean of the Faculty of Science to present the Graduating students."
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD)
The student will process in her robe.
The Dean of the Faculty of Science
The Dean will rise, cap and say:
"Will the PhD candidates of the Faculty of Sciemce, please, rise."
The Dean will then address the Chancellor as follows:
"Mr. Chancellor, in the name of the Faculty of Science and by authority of Senate, I present to you these candidates who has been found worthy both in character and in learning, for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in their respective discipline." They are:

The candidates will move towards the Dean who will hood them. They will then proceed towards the Vice-Chancellor who will affix the doctoral cap on the candidates.
The Vice-Chancellor will say:
On behalf of Congregation and the Senate of the University of Buea, I welcome you to the fold of academic doctors and congratulate you this achievement which honours you and the university community.
The Chancellor will then stand, receive the graduate and hand out the scroll, saying:
"By the authority conferred on me, I herby admit you to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Buea, with all rights, duties and privileges appertainig thereto"
The graduates will shake hands with the Chancellor and take their seats among their peers.

Diese Zeremonie wiederholt sich in entsprechender Form für alle Studenten. Wobei die Bachelor und Master auf ihren Plätzen bleiben und dem Chancellor nicht die Hand schütteln. Ganz zum Schluss legen die Studenten den Bändel an ihrem Hut von der rechten auf die linke Seite. Damit sind sie graduiert.
Da nicht so viel Reden gehalten wurden, ging das Ganze recht schnell von statten und dann war Fotoshooting in allen Lagen angesagt.
